No-one talks much as we eat Nan’s leftover turkey soup. Then Nan takes the Land Rover into town to stock up on food supplies, and Rob and Amber decide they’re going for a walk up to the ridge to clear their heads.

“We should call at the caravan and see if Luke has found any information on his communicator.” I lower my voice. “And last night Sian gave me the number of the guy who did her fake ID,” I add. “We’ll get paperwork done for everyone.”

But no-one has seen Luke since he went home with Sian, and Hans and Leia don’t have any theories on who would clone Sarah.

I ring Layton, the ID guy, who agrees to make five fake identity cards for a price so eye-watering that it will wipe out most of my bank account. We spend the next hour trying to take decent passport-style photos of everyone. It’s too dark in the caravan, but the grey outside wall is perfect as a background. We’re about to go back inside when Leia spots Luke walking up the track.

“That was good timing,” I say. “I’ll get a photo for his ID too, so I can send them all at the same time.”

“Well, I’m not staying out here,” states Leia. “I’ve had enough standing about in the snow for one day.”

“Me too,” agrees Sarah.

And Hans follows them inside, leaving me standing, waiting by myself.

Perfect!

Luke is striding over the field purposefully now, almost with a swagger. In fact, the way he’s circling his neck and shoulders as he walks, he could be warming up for a fight.

He stops several paces away. Legs astride. “How you want settle this?” he asks.

“Settle…?” I frown at him. What’s wrong with him now? “What are you talking about, mate?”

“You wait outside for fight,” he says.

“What? No!” I splutter. “Why would I want to fight you?”

I’ve never been a fighter, and I can’t imagine that any altercation would end well for me up against him, at any rate.

Luke takes a step backwards. “You not care I with Sian?” he asks.

Ah, now I understand what’s going through his head.

“No, of course not,” I say. “Me and Sian were over long ago.”

“Why you wait here then?” Luke demands. “Why you not inside with others?”

I hold up my phone, hoping he doesn’t notice how much my hands are shaking. “I’ve been taking photos of everyone, so I can get you all some ID,” I explain. “And it’s too dark in the caravan.”

There’s a silence. Then Luke nods. “I see.”

“Right, stand in front of the caravan wall,” I tell Luke. My hands are still shaking as I hold up my phone. “And you should take off your hat.”

I’m relieved when Luke does as I ask.

“I not see Sian on purpose to annoy you,” says Luke, as I snap a headshot. “She is good girl.”

I nod.

The photo I’ve taken is blurry. My hands must still be shaking.

“I’ll take another,” I tell him.

I line up the shot, concentrating on keeping steady. Luke stares straight at me and his eyes look sad.
